Meta Description Length Checker

Write or paste a meta description, or enter a page URL to check its existing description. Measure character count and estimated display width, then preview and edit how the snippet may appear in search results.

There isn't a fixed Google character limit. The range below is a practical writing target, not a rule.

Your draft stays in your browser. Nothing you type here is uploaded or stored by Moltoyo.

Practical target: 120–155 charactersNot a Google limit

Google doesn't set a fixed meta description character limit. Snippets are created dynamically and may be shortened depending on the search, device and available width.

Width is an approximation. Search results vary by device, query and layout.

How Long Should a Meta Description Be?

There isn't one official character limit for a meta description. Google can shorten a search snippet when it needs to fit the available space, and it may show different text for different searches.

For drafting, 120–155 characters is a useful range to work with. It usually gives you enough room to explain what the page offers without putting the most important part of the message too far toward the end.

Treat that range as a writing guideline, not a technical requirement. A shorter description can work perfectly well when it says everything it needs to say. A longer one isn't invalid either — some of it simply may not appear in a particular search result.

Characters vs Display Width

Character count is convenient, but characters don't all occupy the same amount of space. A row of wide letters such as "W" takes more room than the same number of narrow letters such as "i".

That's why this checker shows both character count and estimated width. Neither number can predict every Google result, but together they give you a better picture than character count alone.

The same principle applies to page titles. See how it affects SEO titles in the Ideal SEO Title Length guide.

Will Google Always Use My Meta Description?

No. The meta description is a suggestion for the search snippet, not a guarantee. Google can use it when it describes the page well, but it can also pull text from the page when another passage is more relevant to a particular search.

That means the best description isn't simply one that fits a counter. It should accurately summarize the page and make sense to someone deciding whether the result answers their question.

Why Check the Length at All?

Because you still control the description you provide. If the useful part of the message is buried at the end of a very long description, it may not be visible in every result.

Checking the length helps you decide what deserves to come first. Usually that's the page's main value, subject or answer — not filler added to reach a particular number of characters.

If the ending is shortened, the most useful part of the message disappears. Move it earlier rather than simply deleting random words.

What Makes a Good Meta Description?

Describe the actual page

Tell the searcher what they'll find after clicking. A description that promises something the page doesn't deliver isn't useful, even when its length is perfect.

Put the main point early

Don't make the reader wait until the final words to understand the page. Important information near the beginning is less vulnerable if the snippet is shortened.

Write naturally

A meta description is read by people. Repeating keywords wastes space and usually makes the snippet harder to scan.

Make descriptions specific

Generic descriptions could belong to hundreds of pages. Mention the information, product, service or answer that makes this URL different.

Give people a reason to continue

A useful detail can be more persuasive than a generic call to action. Price, availability, scope, comparison criteria or a clear answer may do more work than "Learn more."

What Happens If a Meta Description Is Too Long?

Nothing breaks. A long meta description doesn't stop a page from being indexed, and the HTML tag doesn't become invalid simply because it passes 155 or 160 characters.

The practical risk is presentation: a search result may show only part of it, or Google may choose another snippet altogether. If something important is sitting at the end, move it earlier before worrying about shaving off individual characters.

Can a Meta Description Be Too Short?

Short isn't automatically bad. If a sentence clearly describes the page in 90 characters, padding it to 150 doesn't make it better.

Very short descriptions can leave useful information out, though. The question to ask isn't "Have I reached the minimum?" but "Would this give someone enough context to understand the result?"

Does Meta Description Length Affect Rankings?

Don't optimize the description as if character count were a ranking signal. Its main job is to describe the page clearly and help the search result communicate what the user will find.

Length matters mostly because of presentation. A concise description gives you more control over which parts of your message are likely to remain visible.

How to Use the Meta Description Length Checker

  1. Write or paste a meta description, or use Check URL to retrieve one from a public page.
  2. Check the character count and estimated display width.
  3. Use the SERP preview to see where important wording may become difficult to display.
  4. Edit the description until the main point is clear without relying on an exact character target.
  5. Copy the final version when you're ready to add it to your page.

Descriptions you type or paste are analyzed in your browser. When you use URL lookup, the URL is sent to Moltoyo to retrieve publicly available page metadata.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ideal meta description length?
There isn't an official fixed Google character limit. For drafting, around 120–155 characters is a useful practical range, but the best length is the one that describes the page clearly without hiding important information at the end.
Does Google have a 155-character meta description limit?
No. Google doesn't specify a fixed 155-character limit for the meta description element. Search snippets are shortened as needed to fit the available display space.
What happens if a meta description is over 155 characters?
The description is still valid. A search result may display only part of it, and Google may also generate a different snippet from the page content.
Can a meta description be under 120 characters?
Yes. A shorter description can be perfectly useful when it communicates the page clearly. Don't add filler just to reach a target length.
Does Google always show the meta description I write?
No. Google can use the supplied meta description, but it may instead select text from the page when that text better matches a particular search.
Are pixels more important than characters?
Width is useful because different characters occupy different amounts of space, but this tool only estimates display width. Actual search snippets vary by device and search layout.
Does meta description length affect SEO rankings?
Don't treat the length itself as a ranking signal. The description is primarily useful for communicating what the page contains when it appears as part of a search snippet.
How can I check my SEO title length?
Use Moltoyo's SEO Title Length Checker to measure title characters and width separately.
Is this meta description checker free?
Yes. The tool is free to use and doesn't require an account.
