What is a Character Counter?
A character counter measures the exact length of any text: characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time. It is the fastest way to respect a limit — SEO metadata, social posts, SMS, ads, forms, academic assignments — or to inspect what your content actually contains. Everything runs locally in the browser; nothing is uploaded or stored.
How the Character Count is Calculated
Every visible unit of text — letters, numbers, punctuation, symbols, spaces and line breaks — is one character. Emoji are counted as emoji, even when composed of multiple Unicode code points. As you type, the engine recomputes character statistics, a category-level breakdown and structural insights so you always know what the text holds.
Character Count With vs Without Spaces
Social networks and SEO fields include spaces in their limits; academic style guides and many technical specs do not. Both totals are shown at once so you never guess which value applies. For practical estimates covering common word counts and page lengths, see the complete character count guide.
Example: “Hello world”
- With spaces: 11
- Without spaces: 10
- Word count: 2
Why Character Count Matters
- SEO: titles and meta descriptions have display limits — a character check prevents truncation in the SERP.
- Social media: posts, bios and captions enforce hard maximums that vary per platform.
- Academic writing: essays, abstracts and personal statements commonly specify strict character limits.
- SMS: a standard text fits 160 GSM-7 characters before it splits across multiple messages.
- Engineering: database columns, identifiers and API payloads cap the number of characters allowed.
- Copywriting: ads, buttons and product titles convert better when they fit without being cut off.
Common Character Limits by Platform
Platforms revise their limits over time. Always confirm on the source; the values below are the widely accepted references at the time of writing.
| Platform / Field | Limit | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Google SEO Title | ~60 | 50–60 |
| Meta Description | ~155 | 150–155 |
| X (Twitter) post | 280 | 220–260 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 | 138–150 (before “more”) |
| Instagram bio | 150 | 120–150 |
| Facebook post | 63,206 | 40–80 for engagement |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 | 1,500–2,000 |
| LinkedIn headline | 220 | 180–220 |
| SMS (single GSM-7) | 160 | ≤ 160 |
| Email subject line | ~60 | 30–50 |
| TikTok caption | 2,200 | ≤ 150 |
Character limits may change over time. Always verify the latest official platform documentation before publishing important content.
Character Counter FAQ
- What counts as a character?
- Every single unit of text: letters, numbers, punctuation, symbols, spaces and line breaks. Emoji count too, though one emoji can be built from several Unicode code points and may consume more than one slot in certain platform limits.
- Are spaces characters?
- Yes. Spaces, tabs and line breaks are all characters. Most platforms include them in their limits, which is why the counter shows both totals side by side: with spaces and without spaces.
- How many characters fit in a tweet?
- Posts on X (Twitter) allow up to 280 characters — links, mentions and hashtags included. For a limit-aware view, use the dedicated Twitter Character Counter.
- How many characters are in one page?
- A single-spaced page in 12pt Arial holds roughly 3,000 characters with spaces, or about 500 words. Double-spaced pages hold around 1,500 characters.
- How many characters is 150 words?
- About 900 characters in English, assuming an average of six characters per word including spaces. Actual length depends on vocabulary — paste the text above for the exact count.
- How do I count characters without spaces?
- The counter always displays both values. The “No spaces” card reports characters excluding whitespace, which is the format many academic assignments and technical specs require.
- What is the difference between character count and word count?
- Character count measures every letter, number, symbol and space. Word count measures how many space-separated words the text contains. Character limits dominate social media and SEO; word limits dominate essays and long-form content.
- Can I count emoji?
- Yes. The Character Breakdown reports emoji separately from letters, numbers and punctuation. Note that a single emoji can occupy more than one character under some platform limits.
