Text Analysis Guide
How Many Words Per Page?
About 500 words fit on a single-spaced page, or around 250 on a double-spaced page, using a standard 12pt font and 1-inch margins.
That's a useful rule of thumb, not a fixed conversion. Change the font, spacing, margins or paragraph structure and the page count changes with it.
Why Isn't There One Exact Number?
A page isn't a fixed unit of writing. Two documents can contain exactly 1,000 words and still end up with different page counts.
Line spacing makes the biggest obvious difference: double spacing puts much less text on each page than single spacing. Font size, font choice and margins matter too. Headings, short paragraphs, lists, quotations and images can push the page count higher without adding many words.
That's why the figures below are estimates. They're useful for planning an essay, report or manuscript, but the final page count comes from the formatting of the actual document.
How Many Pages Is My Word Count?
Use the table for a quick estimate. The figures assume 12pt Times New Roman and 1-inch margins.
| Words | Single spaced | 1.5 spacing | Double spaced |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | 0.5 page | 0.7 page | 1 page |
| 500 | 1 page | 1.3 pages | 2 pages |
| 750 | 1.5 pages | 2 pages | 3 pages |
| 1,000 | 2 pages | 2.7 pages | 4 pages |
| 1,250 | 2.5 pages | 3.3 pages | 5 pages |
| 1,500 | 3 pages | 4 pages | 6 pages |
| 2,000 | 4 pages | 5.3 pages | 8 pages |
| 2,500 | 5 pages | 6.7 pages | 10 pages |
| 3,000 | 6 pages | 8 pages | 12 pages |
| 4,000 | 8 pages | 10.7 pages | 16 pages |
| 5,000 | 10 pages | 13.3 pages | 20 pages |
| 10,000 | 20 pages | 26.7 pages | 40 pages |

Common Word Counts
How many pages is 250 words?
About half a page single-spaced or one page double-spaced.
How many pages is 500 words?
About one page single-spaced or two pages double-spaced.
How many pages is 750 words?
About 1.5 pages single-spaced or three pages double-spaced.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
About two pages single-spaced or four pages double-spaced.
How many pages is 1,500 words?
About three pages single-spaced or six pages double-spaced.
How many pages is 2,000 words?
About four pages single-spaced or eight pages double-spaced.
How many pages is 2,500 words?
About five pages single-spaced or ten pages double-spaced.
How many pages is 3,000 words?
About six pages single-spaced or twelve pages double-spaced.
These estimates use the standard formatting described above. A document with larger text, wider margins or frequent headings will usually run longer.
How Many Words Is a Page?
If the assignment gives you a page target instead of a word limit, work in the other direction.
| Pages | Single spaced | Double spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ~500 words | ~250 words |
| 2 | ~1,000 words | ~500 words |
| 3 | ~1,500 words | ~750 words |
| 4 | ~2,000 words | ~1,000 words |
| 5 | ~2,500 words | ~1,250 words |
| 6 | ~3,000 words | ~1,500 words |
| 8 | ~4,000 words | ~2,000 words |
| 10 | ~5,000 words | ~2,500 words |
| 20 | ~10,000 words | ~5,000 words |
So a five-page paper might mean roughly 1,250 words if it's double-spaced, but closer to 2,500 if it's single-spaced. Check the required formatting before setting a writing target.
What Changes the Number of Words on a Page?
Line spacing
Spacing changes the answer quickly. At the same font size and margins, a double-spaced document needs roughly twice as many pages as a single-spaced version of the same text.
Font and font size
Fonts don't all take up the same amount of space. A larger font also means fewer words fit on each page. That's why page estimates should always mention the font and size they're based on.
Margins
Wider margins leave less room for text. Narrower margins do the opposite. Standard 1-inch margins are useful for estimates because they're common in academic and professional documents.
Paragraphs and headings
A page filled with long paragraphs holds text differently from one with frequent headings, bullet lists or short paragraphs. White space counts toward page length even though it adds no words.
Images, tables and quotations
Anything that occupies part of the page reduces the room available for body text. Reports and academic papers with charts, tables or block quotations can therefore run longer than a simple word-to-page calculation suggests.
Single-Spaced vs Double-Spaced Pages
The same 1,000 words might take about two pages single-spaced and four pages double-spaced. Nothing about the writing changed — only the space between the lines did.
That's why a page requirement without formatting instructions is ambiguous. If you're working on an assignment, check whether the required format specifies spacing, font size and margins before using a page target.
Should You Measure Words or Pages?
Word count is usually the more consistent measurement. Five hundred words remains 500 words whether you change the font or widen the margins; five pages does not.
Page count still matters when the final layout matters — printed reports, manuscripts, submissions and assignments are obvious examples. But when you're measuring the amount of writing itself, word count is easier to compare.

What Does the Word Count Mean for Reading Time?
Page count tells you how much physical space the writing occupies. Reading time answers a different question: how long someone might spend reading it.
Two documents with the same number of pages can have different amounts of text, so word count is generally a better starting point for estimating reading time.
Use the Reading Time Calculator if you want to estimate a draft separately.
Words, Pages and Characters
Some limits aren't given in words or pages at all. Forms, social profiles and digital interfaces often use character limits instead.
If you need to measure characters with or without spaces, use the Character Counter. If you're trying to understand how common word counts translate into characters, the How Many Characters Is…? guide has quick reference tables.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How many words are in one page?
- About 500 words single-spaced or 250 words double-spaced is a useful estimate for 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. The actual number varies with formatting.
- How many pages is 1,000 words?
- About two pages single-spaced or four pages double-spaced using standard 12pt formatting and 1-inch margins.
- How many words are in 5 pages?
- Approximately 2,500 words single-spaced or 1,250 words double-spaced under standard formatting.
- How many words are in 10 pages?
- Approximately 5,000 words single-spaced or 2,500 words double-spaced under standard formatting.
- Does font size affect how many words fit on a page?
- Yes. Larger text takes up more space, so fewer words fit on each page. Font family can also change the result because different typefaces have different character widths and spacing.
- Does double spacing double the number of pages?
- As a rough estimate, it often comes close. A document that takes about two pages single-spaced may take roughly four pages double-spaced, although paragraph spacing and other formatting can change the exact result.
- Is 500 words one page?
- Roughly one page when single-spaced. The same 500 words are usually around two pages when double-spaced using a standard 12pt font and 1-inch margins.
- Is word count or page count more accurate?
- Word count is more consistent because it doesn't change when the document is reformatted. Page count depends on font, spacing, margins and layout.
